It's All about LOVE

E-mail Print PDF

Life should always be about love. It's simple, really.

And yeah, today is Valentine's Day, so everyone's talking love. So here are some options you might have overlooked: some music about love and some books about love. I asked Facebook Friends to share ideas for music and books that fit (and, at the end I have a book that "is not a love story").

So here are some of my Facebook Friends' suggestions. I hope you check a few out. :)

Some Music for Romance:

By Ophelia's Looking Glass
Listen to and buy Ophelia's Looking Glass music on CD Baby.
Download or buy the CD The Siren and the Beast by Ophelia's Looking Glass on the independent record store by musicians for musicians.

By Autumn Fire
Try: Somehow

By Max Scialdone
Try: Broke and See The Sun

  • For Romance:

Karen Kincy's novels:
Paranormal young adult

Flux Publishing
First sentence of OTHER: "I can't last much longer."
Other (An Other Novel)
Feathers unfurl from my skin. My plummet curves into a swoop, and I tuck my talons beneath my body. From girl to great horned owl in about a second. Pretty good, huh? Gwen Williams is like any other modern teenager with one exception: she's a shapeshifter.

Linda Joy Singleton's novels:

LAST DANCE (The Seer series)

Sabine can't wait to show off her new boyfriend at the upcoming school dance, but she's also worried about her grandmother, Nona, who's suffering from a fatal hereditary illness. The only cure lies within a remedy book, lost long ago.

Laura Kreitzer's novels:
Young Adult | SciFi
Revolution Publishing Inc.
Available in: NOOK Book (eBook), Paperback. Sold into slavery to pirates at the young age of four, Summer learns to survive the rough seas of subterfuge and thieves through silence.

Fiction | Paranormal Romance
Revolution Publishing Inc.
Available in: NOOK Book (eBook), Paperback, Hardcover. Gabriella's past is a mystery, but that never stopped her from achieving her goals. As a supernatural specialist, and far more intelligent than anyone her age, she has always been ignored by her peers.

Wenona Hulsey's novel:
Paranormal Romance/Epic Fantasy.
BLOOD AWAKENING (the first story in the Blood Burden Series).
Indie Published.
"Let's get this party started!"

Charlotte Bennardo's and Natalie Zaman's novel:
Contemporary mythology
SIRENZ series
"God, you're wearing those clunky things again?"

Barry Eva's book:
Short Stories
This compilation, the first in a series of books with short stories, is short enough to read over a cup of tea or coffee, or whenever you have some time to yourself, yet long enough to bring a tear to your eye or a smile to your face. In fact some people call them “bathroom stories” as that might be the only place you get five minutes peace and quiet to yourself.

  • Not For Romance:

Jessica Roscoe's Novel:

Paranormal Young adult / New adult

Indiana Ink Publishing

This is not a story about love.

So much has happened so fast! As many of you know, my new YA series (through St. Martin's Press) is in the steampunk genre (though, for reasons readers will quickly come to understand, I call "stormpunk"). The first novel, WEATHER WITCH, releases in the United States on June 25.

In this post, I'll cover:

Coffee Time Romance's WEATHER WITCH Interview

E-mail Print PDF

The great folks at Coffee Time Romance have just opened a new area on their awesome site--an area devoted to STEAMPUNK. That's right, kids, the genre is growing and there is plenty of adventure to come!

I'd like to first invite you to check out their Steampunk Area.

Karenne at Coffee Time Romance had these questions for me (and due to some craziness on the 28th that my Facebook Friends know about) I'm behind on posting this--apologies!

1. What does Steampunk mean to you?

Steampunk, cyberpunk, and the musical style called punk all feature the theme of rebellion and the fierce spirit of the people working toward change and understanding in a setting defined by the word's first syllable or two. So steampunk is, to me, rebellion in the time period when steam was the main technology.

2. What is your favorite thing about steampunk or writing about steampunk?
I love researching history and then diverging creatively from the history I've researched.

3. What is your favorite steampunk accessory?
Can I consider an airship an accessory? I do love them enough I wish I could tuck one in a pocket and expand it whenever needed...

4. What turned you on to steampunk?
Cyberpunk ironically got me curious about steampunk because I love history and rebellion and began reading the works of Gibson recently. Steampunk, in my mind, is essentially science fiction in the Victorian/Edwardian era.

5. Do you have any upcoming Steampunk stories you can tell us about?
WEATHER WITCH is the debut steampunk novel in my YA steampunk series through St. Martin's Press. It releases June 25, 2013 and is set in the 1840s on America's east coast. My main female character is Jordan Astraea, a girl who is accused of something horrible the night of a grand birthday party. I integrate paranormal elements in the story as well as romantic elements. I'll also be writing at least one freebie short story for readers in advance of its release, but right now I'm trying to decide which short story to pursue first.

6. Who is your favorite character of all from one of your Steampunk stories?
Oh, if I told you that, readers of WEATHER WITCH would think I'm crazy because, as I'm currently revising the second novel, one of my characters has evolved into someone I truly adore.

7. What's the hardest thing about creating a Steampunk universe?
Balancing the history of the period with the drama and fun that comes from writing fiction.

8. What's the easiest thing about creating a Steampunk universe?
Falling into research and just reading and absorbing and brainstorming the possibilities.

9. What does steampunk allow you to do as a writer that no other genres can?

I honestly don't know. I'd like to think a truly clever and creative author could work with essentially no restriction in any genre (except non-fiction).

10. What are the challenges and advantages to writing a steampunk story?
Finding and maintaining a balance between history and divergent fiction are equally challenges and advantages.

11. How much research does it take and how much imagination?
That, I think, is a personal choice. For me, I think the research was significant, but the amount of research when weighed against imagination probably seems minuscule to readers as I hope my research simply permeates the background and deepens the natural environment instead of feeling like a reader suddenly stumbled into a history textbook.

WEATHER WITCH releases to the public June 25 of this year and is already available for pre-order everywhere!

Now, go, check out Coffee Time Romance and all the cool stuff they have to share--interviews, contests and blog tours, have some coffee (of course!) and enjoy some great reading!

Have a great week, folks!

What and Where Wednesday: Win an Agent or Win WEATHER WITCH

E-mail Print PDF

I'll apologize in advance... At the moment I appear to be having technical difficulties with my post, so you'll need to copy and paste the URLs I mention this week. But honestly, if you're an aspiring author and the hardest struggle you face today is copying and pasting a link--you're doing FINE.

We have two chances to win this week--one for readers and one for aspiring authors.

Let's start with the authors. WRITERS DIGEST is hosting a contest to connect an aspiring author with a literary agent. They are specifically looking for YA and Science Fiction. Go, check it out!

And for readers?!?! St. Martin's Press has announced a contest on Goodreads for my upcoming YA steampunk/stormpunk novel WEATHER WITCH! Copies are available to 100 lucky winners here for a limited period of time--good luck:

Good luck, gang!
